Prepare your friends and family for the next revolution (Appleseed Project)

Just last week I heard of the Appleseed Project for the first time. Since then I've done some research, and I firmly believe that all of GIM needs to get involved with Project Appleseed AND do everything within our power to persuade those around us to attend Appleseed events.

Our liberties are crashing down around us, and most people are completely oblivious. Most people don't understand the blood and tears invested over two centuries ago to sever our land from the grips of a tyrannical monarchy. Because of this ignorance our neighbors are blind to the plain fact that our government is becoming the very tyranny that our founders died to overthrow.

The Appleseed Project takes patriotic citizens of all colors, genders, and ages and turns them into "Riflemen... A marksman capable of hitting a man-sized target from 500 yards away." At a 2-day Appleseed event all participants are not only trained in the basic rifle skills necessary to shoot accurately, but they are also taught the very important history of the Revolutionary War and the principles that brought about revolution.

All of those who successfully complete the Appleseed training course are certified as Instructors within the Appleseed Project and are expected to represent the values of the organization in promoting the Project and recruiting new trainees.

I have not yet attended one of these events, but I can guarantee that I will be attending one this summer. However, I will go on Saturday only because I intend to respect the Lord's Day... unless I can talk them into a Friday/Saturday event. They have assured me that all of the training takes place on Saturday and that the second day is strictly for the reinforcement of the training through practice an competition.

Furthermore, I am in talks with the Wisconsin coordinator regarding hosting an event on my wife's family's farm.

Please check out the Appleseed Project here: http://appleseedinfo.org/. Be sure to read the founder's article here: "Our Plan to Save America."

Although it is not explicitly stated, I believe it is inferred that this training is to prepare people to be willing to stand up to blatant tyranny, and if that is the case, this sort of nation-wide standardization program will be much more effective than local militias.

By the way, women attend the events for free! It is their way of trying to get more women trained in marksmanship. This is good for me because I have four daughters. ;)

If you have participated in an Appleseed Project event, please post your experience in this thread!

Bump! I know... my thread title wasn't very exciting. This is too important to be overlooked at GIM... ESPECIALLY in light of the new "Counsel of Governors"!

took my Wife and youngest Son in the fall of 08.
It was a good refresher for me and my Family learned a lot!
The stories were great! Get and read the book...Paul Revere's ride...it was reccomended by the instructors and it is a wonderfull book. It goes into some detail about the "oldMen"

I've never been to one but I want to go. Maybe I'll look at doing one with my wife and I in the spring...depending on how far away the closest one is.

They sound like a lot of fun!

Man, I need to seriously hit an Appleseed event.
Gonna check the dates for around me right now.

Are they only on Shabbat?

They do some Sunday/Monday events occasionally. They said they are willing to see if there is enough interest to do a Friday/Saturday event.

Thanks for the reminder SLV. I've been wanting to take in one of these for a while now. There was one close to me last October but of course I had too much going on.

It is on our list for this year as well.

Re: Take your friends and family to Appleseed events!

Been to three so far. I will be hitting my fourth one this year...and then maybe a fifth.

The key is though to take someone new with you each time. So far, I have taken 3 friends and my better half. The inlaws are going next.

So for you Appleseeders in the know, I have completed Step 7 a few times over. :wavey: ...and will continue to do so.

So come on fellas....get out to an Appleseed, and take a friend. Not much better things out there then freedom, liberty, and shooting!

MaDMax,

How young would you take someone? My oldest two have their own .22 LR (Savage Cub with Acutrigger). They are 7 and 6. Should I take them this summer? My wife is interested in joining me especially since it is free. I'm telling her that we both need to get new rifles to make sure we are ready! ;)

That's a tough call...it really depends on the maturity level of the child. I have seen kids as young as 7 shooting at an AS. Though I do suggest that you go to an AS first so you know what to expect. The firing line can be quite intimidating for some. It is very fast paced. However, at the Appleseed's I have been to, the instructors were very accommodating and helpful to the young ones.

New rifles! I hope that works for you. I just built up a Liberty 10/22 trainer for my Mother-in-law. She is excited about going.

Good Luck!

Re: Take your friends and family to Appleseed events!

I cannot recommend the Appleseed program enough. This may really be the movement that saves America.

<SLV>, I think 7 and 6 are too young. It's an intense 2 days of training, and they may not have the attention span. I have seen one 8 y.o. though, and he was fine. I'd second the idea to attend yourself first. Another option, after you've gone yourself, might be to attend a Mini, which is usually one day instead of two. You can ask a shoot Boss if any are available in your area.

Re: Take your friends and family to Appleseed events!

Appleseeds are awesome. Its 'our kind of group' promoting all good Americans to know how to shoot straight.

"People who shoot straight think straight"

the stories are awesome, and as a novice shooter, the instruction was awesome. Can't argue too much with the price either!

Looking at the stuff to bring it says Ear protection Muffs and plugs. Wonder why they require both for outdoor shooting.

MetalMoney 01-30-2010 02:27 PM

Re: Take your friends and family to Appleseed events!

No, just some type of ear protection is acceptable.

The main thing you want is a goot shooting mat. Almost all of the shooting is done prone, and also includes transitions from standing to prone, so having a decent mat witha little padding is helpful.

In addition to that, water, lunch and a stapler is about all you'll need in addition to your rifle + ammo.... Get good ammo... This isnt the event to go cheap on. When you blow 'Rifleman' because you had a FTE on a stage, you'll be upset!

I understand that most instructors frown on foreign platforms, but they will let you use whatever you bring. Better take the AR-15.

You're gonna burn 400 - 500 rounds during the weekend. I'd work on a .22 first. If you cant/wont do a .22, then take the AR.

This training is much more about learning the mechanics of a good shot than it is about long-range or recoil etc. Why burn $300+ in ammo when 95% of the same experience can be gained with $20 - $40 in ammo.

If you do both days, taking a center fire during the second day to see if you can successfully transition what you've learned from day 1 on a rimfire may be useful and would burn much less ammo money.

22lr is perfect for this training. Look into making your ruger 10/22 into a liberty trainer.
Peep sights, sling, extended mag release will get it done.

Looking at the details more, I see that this training is really done at 25 meters with a small target that is supposed to synthesize 500 yds. That was why I had posed the question on what type of ammo. I don't know how that really works given that it won't take into account the trajectory of the bullets traveling 500 yds. I know an AK-47 would be really difficult at that range.

I think standard military practice is to zero a rifle at 25 meters (a lot of rise to line of sight) and therefore have a subsequent zero at 300 meters. Maybe someone else can confirm or deny this.

After going to appleseed and practicing quite a bit I went to a 600 yard shoot and could hit the bullseye regularly.

Without what I learned at appleseed I doubt I would have done so well.

I have shot firearms since I was a small child. I considered myself a pretty good shot. I never realized that there is a procedure to firing a shot untill appleseed training.
I suggest anybody considering going to an appleseed
get the riflemans guide and a few practice targets to work with before you go.

Do they mind if you bring a scoped rifle? I'm thinking about using a target/varmint 22 that has no iron sights.

Also...you might get lucky at your event and they will let you shoot long range. At the AS in CDA, Idaho, on the second day they will let you shoot out to 400 yards.

One last bit of advice...bring some Vitamin M (Motrin). You are going to need it!

I signed up this morning! Anyone going to join me on Saturday, 6/26, in La Crosse, WI? If that is too far for you, then pick one closer, but DO SIGN UP!

This year I decided to only invite friends who are skilled with firearms. I want to get a feel for it before I drag a noobie to one.

Appleseed is very Nerbie friendly. If your friends know hot to safely handle a firearm, and how to load / unload the rifle you intend on using... You're good to go..

The instructors start off on very basic terms, but they will be very tight on security / safety....

Interestingly, the safety no-no's in my class were mainly from the guys with 20 - 30 years experience...

There was also a pair of 12-13 yr old kids that did great and never had any issues!
